BREANNA BROCKMAN STOOD at the kitchen window in the Anderson house and watched the torrent of rain. Lightning flashed overhead and thunder boomed like cannons on a battlefield as trees cracked in the high wind. It was the third day in a row that heavy rainstorms had come to this small town high in the Rocky Mountains.

Turning from the rain-splattered window, Breanna stepped to the stove and picked up the steaming teakettle, which was just beginning to whistle. She carried it to the table and smiled at Effie Downing, who was coming through the hall door. “Are they still sleeping?” she asked.

Effie nodded and sat down at the table. While Breanna poured the steaming liquid into teacups, Effie said, “I don’t understand how Rose and Donnie can sleep through all that racket.”

“Well, I’m glad they can,” said Breanna, taking the teakettle back to the stove.

“So what do you think, Breanna?”

“Well, it seems to me that Rose is doing well enough that you can look in on her periodically during the days, just to make sure she’s all right. Since she’s on her feet part of the day now, I think she can take care of Donnie. She’ll have Ray here at night.”

“Helps a lot since Donnie’s been weaned onto cow’s milk,” said Effie. “I’m glad the little fellow made the transition with so little stomach upset.”

“Me, too,” said Breanna, taking a sip of tea. She set the cup down and started to say something else, but was interrupted by a loud crack of lightning. The thunder that followed shook the whole house.

“If they slept through that one, they’ll really be doing something,” said Effie. “You were about to say something, Breanna.”

“I was going to say that when this rain eases up, I’ll walk on over to the office and tell Dr. Rawlins that you and I discussed it, and we agree that I should head on home. If he’s in agreement, I’ll go ahead and wire John in the morning. If he can come tomorrow, I’ll be gone then. But it may take another day.”

They heard Donnie’s cry from the bassinet, which was now beside Rose’s bed, and both women left the kitchen. When they reached the bedroom, Rose was up with the baby in her arms.

“We were hoping the storm wouldn’t waken either of you, dear,” said Effie. “But we’re not surprised that you’re awake.”

Rose sat down on the bed and held the baby close to her breast, patting his back and speaking in a soft tone.

When the pounding of the rain on the roof began to lessen and the lightning and thunder eased, Donnie drifted back to sleep.

Breanna extended her arms. “Here, honey, I’ll take him. You lie down again.”

Breanna placed Donnie in the bassinet, then stood over Rose, who was being tended to by Effie.

Rose set her gaze on Breanna. “Have you decided yet?”

“Mm-hmm. Effie and I talked about it. She says she can look in on you a few times during the day, and since Ray will be here at night, I might as well go home.
