Joel, played by Morrow, as we know spent a total of six seasons, or five years, on the series before leaving in “The Quest.” And while life went on for the people of Cicely after his departure, he nevertheless—like all those who pass through Cicely—left an impression. Northern Exposure lasted six seasons on CBS before its curtains closed. Just as Joel had left an impression on Cicely after he returned to New York City, Northern Exposure had, without a doubt, left an impression on television beyond its cancellation. Like many so-called cult favorites or classics of the late 1980s and 1990s—such as the aforementioned Twin Peaks, but also Thirtysomething, Picket Fences, My So-Called Life, and Freaks and Geeks, to name but a few—Northern Exposure did not live out its years on broadcast television for the multitude of reasons explored in this chapter. However, with VHS tapes, DVDs, and more recently Blu-ray, the series has enjoyed a life of its own beyond the schedule. The next chapter explores Northern Exposure’s cultural legacy, examining the invested fan culture the series has inspired and the efforts to revive Northern Exposure, with the aim of bringing its six seasons to contemporary streaming platforms and expanding its reach to new audiences, as well as looking back on the less than positive aspects of the series through a contemporary critical lens.
