Figure 8.1 Guided Reading Worksheet
It is important to understand that if the child hears rather than reads more complex material, her deficits, although significant, are somewhat less severe. Every effort should be made to accommodate this student’s learning style by providing auditory instruction.
It is very, very helpful for the NLD student to “read” novels by listening to them on audiotape. Because of her reading disability, visual processing deficits, and compromised reading speed for new and complex material, she can easily fall behind the other students when reading an assigned book. However, when using a medium compatible with her learning style, she is able to keep up with her classmates, and be more successful in the process. Audiotapes of fiction and literary selections are available through the Reading for the Blind and Dyslexic organization, most local libraries (or through their lending arrangements with other libraries), as well as through bookstores, if the parent chooses to purchase the book on tape.
If an audiotape is not available for a particular book that a teacher feels is critical to the curriculum, then consideration must be given to the quality of the presentation. As children enter the middle school years, many of the outside reading requirements are of paperback books. These books tend to have poorer contrast of ink to paper than hardcover books, smaller type, and significantly less “white space” on the page. There are two alternatives to paperback books. One is to obtain a hardcover book from the school or local library, and arrange for it to be checked out for the duration of the assignment, rather than for the normal period of one to two weeks. The second option is to arrange for a large-print copy of the book. Large-print books have all of the advantages of hardcover books, but the type is larger. Implementing either of these options may require a bit of preplanning, but are absolutely necessary in order to accommodate the NLD student’s disability.
