CHARLES SAT IN THE Minister’s office talking to Brian Morris while passing the time waiting for the Minister’s return from his meeting with the three other cabinet ministers. Suddenly the door flew open, taking them completely by surprise followed by the Minister slamming the door behind him. Ignoring the two men at first he headed for his bar fridge and retrieve three beers then he return to the lounge where he sat with a thud next to Charles forcing a beer into his hand followed by Brian’s. ‘They’re with me!’

Brian returned a cautious half smile ‘How far?’

‘All the way! If Haywood sacks me, they will immediately resign! Then we’ll tell the party what has been happening. After that I will challenge the old bastard. Charles can you assure me your plan will work?’ demanded Kinston who was now so upbeat he didn’t bother waiting for the reply.

Charles nodded.

‘How soon?’

Charles looked the Minister straight in the eye without the slightest bit of hesitation. ‘Tomorrow.’

Stuart’s house, Pondokindah, Jakarta, 1st November 1999.

Stuart arrived home early that afternoon to meet Heru that had been spending a considerable amount of time at their new safe house at Pancoran. He walked up stairs and found Heru sitting on the lounge watching an old Rugby game only turning away for the briefest of moments to acknowledge Stuart. Stuart placed his briefcase next to the TV then turned it off. ‘We need to talk!’

Heru detecting the seriousness in his voice and didn’t protest. He just leaned back to listen and with more than a little concern as a lot had been happening lately and not all to his liking.

‘You’re getting two weeks leave in Australia. So start packing you lucky bastard. I also got you a ticket to a one-day cricket game at the WACA’ declared Stuart.

Heru’s smile increased dramatically after hearing the last bit. ‘Who are the Aussie’s playing?’

‘Who cares? Just seeing some bloody cricket should be good enough’ proclaimed Stuart.

Reaching over to his brief case Stuart pulled out a plastic folder and handed it to Heru. ‘It’s all in here. On Friday you fly out to Perth.’

‘Are the others getting leave?’

‘Not yet! By the way I want you to do something for me.’

Heru lost his smile as he suddenly realised there was a catch and in this business a catch could always be a guaranteed to be unpleasant, if not fatal.

‘The following Wednesday I want you to visit your old boss, Brigadier Lawson and tell him what’s happening up here.’

‘What about Charles he’ll have a fit if he finds out’ declared Heru who was on the verge of standing in protest.

‘Heru you know the situation here but you have no idea what’s been happening in Canberra. Damn I can’t believe I’m doing this. The bloody PM, Haywood has told the cabinet they are to take no action on what we’re been sending them. He simply doesn’t believe the Intel! I know we don’t know where the bastards are going but there’s a good change that Darwin is on top of the list.
