In drama-documentary, our interest is in the rights and wrongs of what is being represented …, or the credibility of the argument … In documentary drama, on the other hand, the doc is merely a means to the dram; specific events are used as a source for treatment of general questions, in the same way as Shakespeare drew on real history, historical myth and his own imagination for plays that dealt with essentially similar themes. Like Nichols, he places one form in the realm of the historical fiction; unlike Nichols, he retains space for a form that has the potential to intervene historically, whatever its provenance. Essentially, this is still the Caughie position on progressive television drama.

Still a proponent of formal innovation as a means towards critical response, still favouring Brechtian collision montage over the integration montage of high naturalism, he returns to Up the Junction and Cathy Come Home in order to make the following point:
