Variables and Functions

In Lesson 4, variables and functions are made concrete through the use of an unplugged activity on creating functional suncatchers. Within the Code.org lesson plan is a video that explains the lesson in detail. This aides in understanding, especially for K–5 teachers who may not be familiar with these terms.

This unplugged activity can meet the Next Generation Science and Engineering Practices in grades 3–5:

Engineering.Design.3-5-ETS1-2: Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem.

If all students are provided with the same supplies (criteria or variables) and the constraints (use of variables to create skill sets) remain consistent and expected, the final products (suncatchers) generated can be compared for multiple possible solutions. This lesson also covers art integration, as students are creating an artistic representation of their computer program.
