However, at the same time of Freud’s epiphany of the ego as the source of resistance he could not see a way of analyzing resistances rather than overcoming them.

If the resistance is itself unconscious, as so often happens owing to its connection with the repressed material, we make it conscious. If it is conscious, or, where it has become conscious, we bring forward logical arguments against it; we promise the ego rewards and advantages if it will give up its resistance.

In this we see that even though Freud opened the door to a purely analytic approach to the resistances (i.e., helping the patient understand the sources of anxiety and the danger behind this), he returned to his technical view of using influence or suggestion to entice the ego’s cooperation in dealing with these interferences. Freud’s struggles with this view remained unresolved throughout the rest of his writing, and influenced those who followed.2
