Charlieâs house, set back about a hundred feet off the main road, looked to be in decent shape from a distance, especially tucked as it was behind a couple trees that had been around longer than the Civil War. But upon closer inspection, one might wonder if it would turn out to be a money pit.
The look on Markâs face as we stood in front of it gave the impression he was of that mind. âExplain again how this is going to work. âCause from where Iâm standing, this donât appear to be the cheapest solution. Itâs in even worse shape than I remembered.â
âI already told you Iâd cover any costs that go over our office budget.â
Mark barked out a laugh and shook his head. âIâm sure itâll be considerable, too. That wonât even pay for a paint job. Howâd Charlie like it if she knew you was bankrolling the repairs on her house?â
âHowâd you like it if I bailed out as your business partner?â
âDonât you worry, Iâve no intention getting in the middle of things with you two. But that donât mean she wonât find out. Women have a sense about things beyond my understanding. Leastways, Cassie does. She can sniff out a lie better than a coon dog tracking a varmint.â
âYou let me worry about that.â
He held up both hands, palms out, in surrender. âThatâs fine with me. Just thought you might could use a little advice seeing as to how inexperienced you are with women.â
My pride took a hit, and I scowled at him. âWhat makes you think Iâm inexperienced?â
He arched a brow. âYou ainât been married, have you?â
I shrugged. âSo?â
âI bet you never even took the same woman out more than a couple times.â
âWhatâs that got to do with anything?â
He crossed his arms and shook his head. âYou ainât even got a sister. Boy, you are surely wading in the deep end without a lifejacket. Just donât say I didnât warn you.â
I could bluster with the best of them, but uneasiness settled in the pit of my belly. He wasnât wrong. Always waiting for the right one to come along, Iâd never had a long-term relationship. No one quite fit what Iâd been looking for. A bright, beautiful, unavailable blonde. Only one of those existed, and she had me about ready to bang my head against a wall every time we tangled.
âSo, whatâs the plan? Swing a hammer or drum up some security business?â
âA little of both is my guess. Cal should be here any minute to look the job over, and weâll figure it out from there.â
âHow âbout you show me our new office space?â
I shrugged. âNot sure Charlieâs figured it out yet, but we can knock on the door and ask.â
As we climbed the steps to the front porch, I tried to see the place through Markâs eyes. Might be I offered to bite off a chunk Iâd have a hard time swallowing. It was a habit of mine to pray before leaping into anything, but not this time.
