Charlie’s house, set back about a hundred feet off the main road, looked to be in decent shape from a distance, especially tucked as it was behind a couple trees that had been around longer than the Civil War. But upon closer inspection, one might wonder if it would turn out to be a money pit.

The look on Mark’s face as we stood in front of it gave the impression he was of that mind. “Explain again how this is going to work. ’Cause from where I’m standing, this don’t appear to be the cheapest solution. It’s in even worse shape than I remembered.”

“I already told you I’d cover any costs that go over our office budget.”

Mark barked out a laugh and shook his head. “I’m sure it’ll be considerable, too. That won’t even pay for a paint job. How’d Charlie like it if she knew you was bankrolling the repairs on her house?”

“How’d you like it if I bailed out as your business partner?”

“Don’t you worry, I’ve no intention getting in the middle of things with you two. But that don’t mean she won’t find out. Women have a sense about things beyond my understanding. Leastways, Cassie does. She can sniff out a lie better than a coon dog tracking a varmint.”

“You let me worry about that.”

He held up both hands, palms out, in surrender. “That’s fine with me. Just thought you might could use a little advice seeing as to how inexperienced you are with women.”

My pride took a hit, and I scowled at him. “What makes you think I’m inexperienced?”

He arched a brow. “You ain’t been married, have you?”

I shrugged. “So?”

“I bet you never even took the same woman out more than a couple times.”

“What’s that got to do with anything?”

He crossed his arms and shook his head. “You ain’t even got a sister. Boy, you are surely wading in the deep end without a lifejacket. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you.”

I could bluster with the best of them, but uneasiness settled in the pit of my belly. He wasn’t wrong. Always waiting for the right one to come along, I’d never had a long-term relationship. No one quite fit what I’d been looking for. A bright, beautiful, unavailable blonde. Only one of those existed, and she had me about ready to bang my head against a wall every time we tangled.

“So, what’s the plan? Swing a hammer or drum up some security business?”

“A little of both is my guess. Cal should be here any minute to look the job over, and we’ll figure it out from there.”

“How ’bout you show me our new office space?”

I shrugged. “Not sure Charlie’s figured it out yet, but we can knock on the door and ask.”

As we climbed the steps to the front porch, I tried to see the place through Mark’s eyes. Might be I offered to bite off a chunk I’d have a hard time swallowing. It was a habit of mine to pray before leaping into anything, but not this time.
