LINDA’S STORY

Linda and Rick had been bookmarking for about six months. They had gotten over their initial embarrassment quickly and could now admit to and discuss fantasies that they wanted to play out. They also had made arrangements with a neighbor to trade off their children. One weekend, they had Patsy and Don’s twins; another weekend, their three boys stayed next door.

One day when Rick was not coming home until late, Linda found an issue of an erotic magazine beside her bed. In it, she found a bookmark. Curious to find out what Rick was interested in now, she opened the magazine.

The bookmark was inserted in a two-page spread advertising dildos, vibrators, and other sex toys.

Many women she knew were open about owning and using a vibrator. There was even a line about being grown up and owning your own vibrator in the movie An Unmarried Woman, which she had seen four times.

But could she really buy something like that? Could she really call some 800 number and order a dildo or vibrator as if she was ordering a new pair of slacks?

She stared at the advertisement for a long time. She had no idea whether she wanted to order anything at all, but the fact that Rick had bookmarked it for her made her consider the idea. She knew that she wasn’t interested in paddles or latex whips and she quickly bypassed ball gags and restraints. She didn’t think she was ready for any of that—at least not yet.

Her gaze kept returning to an ad for a penis-shaped vibrator. “Orgasm guaranteed,” it said. Next to it was a picture of a dildo. “Life-size, flesh-colored—once she uses it, she’ll beg for it,” the ad stated.

The next afternoon, Linda gathered her courage, got the magazine, pulled out her credit card, and dialed the 800 number. She stammered through giving the operator her credit card number and the code numbers next to the items she had selected, the vibrator and the dildo. All the time, she was thinking, Thank God I don’t have to describe what I’m ordering. When she was finished, the operator assured her that her order would be delivered within four weeks, in a plain wrapper.

All she had to do was wait.

She put the magazine back on Rick’s nightstand. That night, although he said nothing, Linda knew that Rick was aware the magazine had been returned.

Several weeks later the box arrived. Linda hid it in her closet until the following Friday evening. Just before she was to escort the children to their neighbor’s house for the night, she slipped upstairs and put the untouched box, still in its original plain brown wrapping, on Rick’s side of the bed. Still saying nothing, she hustled the children out and walked them next door.

“Linda,” Rick called as he heard her return, “I’m in the living room. Come in here as soon as you put your coat away.” His voice sounded so casual. Maybe he hasn’t seen the box yet, she thought.

“Okay,” she answered.
