If you’re getting too few picks per inch (2.5 cm) and the pattern appears elongated or the pattern weft doesn’t fully cover the ground, try beating faster. If that doesn’t help, try opening the sett (about 10 to 15 percent is usually sufficient) to allow more space for the tabby and pattern wefts. You might also look at the angle at which the tabby weft enters the shed. Keep in mind that the tabby has to go over and under every warp end, and doing so requires more take-up than needed by the pattern weft. To allow for more take-up in the tabby, increase the angle of the tabby weft picks or try beating on an open shed so that additional yarn can flow into place when you beat. Some weavers solve the problem by using a thinner tabby or adjusting the number of pattern picks, though I haven’t found this to work for me.
