URGH. I WASN’T FEELING THESE closing time meetings. And on a Sunday, too. I guess since so many of the sea-bees failed to show up to the early morning ones, to punish the rest of us, the winter meetings were held after-hours, when the store was already closed.
Most meetings always started out with Ravinder, and today wasn’t any different. He took the floor for thirty minutes, going over Symposium’s goals for sales during the holidays, but never limited to that. He discussed our holiday return policy, as well as the use of gift receipts. Then he went on into a presentation on how we could increase our chances of loss prevention, as well as how to detect, prevent, and handle fraud.
December opened up a scary and desperate time for folks, and it was easy to let things slip since it was much busier than usual. All basic stuff, really. You sat through one meeting, you’d sat through them all. My semester was ending this week, so a few extra hours in my check kept my attention more. I literally zoned in and out until Martha took the floor.
She announced the major changes that were going down over the next few weeks, but none impacted folks more than reminding us Ravinder was retiring. He and Martha were good friends, so to celebrate, she was throwing a going away party that tied in with the new year. She made it clear we had to make sure we RSVP’d, so she’d know what to expect for the turnout. Apparently she was trying to secure a venue, but she wasn’t sure what would be big enough for the reasonable amount of employees.
I couldn’t believe that, come next year, Ravinder wouldn’t be the merchandising manager anymore. I hadn’t realized how much his absence would affect me until I started acknowledging he’d be gone soon. He’d always been so helpful, especially for one who had his own responsibilities to tend to. It wouldn’t even feel the same without him here.
Tim was the last to speak, and he opened his announcements with jokes—the cornier, the better—to win over the crowd. He looked extra sexy today. The hunter-green sweater he wore was really working for him. Even though I worked with him all the time in the cafe, I couldn’t sneak a decent look without gawking. Being in front of the crowd gave me an excuse to peek without seeming obvious.
“So y’all know I’m replacing Ravinder come January, so I’mma need y’all to do something for me.” He paused for dramatic effect. “I’mma need all y’all to stop asking me, ‘Timbo, change my schedule’ or ‘Tim, I need this day off,’ cuz come new year, I’m not entertaining any of y’alls’ requests!” His statement garnered small laughter from the crowd, mostly from those of us who knew Tim was just kidding. Seriously, these sea-bees needed to lighten up.
“So, anyway, I’m replacing Ravinder, but I know many of you have been wondering, who’s replacing me.” He pointed to himself for emphasis, continuing on the tradition of the manager who took himself the least seriously.
