The writer could have worded these sentences differently; however, she chose to use information focus it-clefts to introduce stylistic variety and (hopefully) maintain reader interest at this midpoint in the narrative about her family’s travels.

Note that although the stress-focus, contrastive it-clefts could conceivably be taught and practiced at the sentence-level, such a strategy would be impossible for teaching the use of information-focus it-clefts, which make use of known information as the focused element in order to introduce new information in the relative clause.
