Members of the Atlantic County Chapter of the American Red Cross Motor Corps. Atlantic City Free Public Library .
Roosevelt went on to declare March Red Cross month and to ask that at least $125 million be raised across the country to support the organization’s efforts.
The Woodbridge Township Red Cross chapter sprang to work following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Realizing the need for money to mobilize their local chapter, volunteers in Woodbridge started fundraising immediately after America entered the war. A letter from the chairman of the national drive, Norman H. Davis, stated, “The American Red Cross again is called upon to serve our nation in war. Both nationally and locally we face vast and definite responsibilities for service to our armed forces and for relief to distressed civilians.” Other initiatives soon followed. A knitting circle was formed to make items to send to the troops overseas. Volunteers collected items to furnish a sunroom at the Camp Kilmer Hospital. They tirelessly collected furniture, cups and saucers, sewing machines, chairs, radios, rugs and much more to make the area more inviting to the troops who stayed there to recuperate from wartime injuries. The impact these gestures had on the troops was made clear in a heartfelt thank you from Camp Kilmer:
We, the men of Company D wish to extend to the people of Woodbridge our sincere thanks for the furniture and accessories sent to us for use in our Day Room. We wish to assure you that we feel that it is acts of kindness of this kind that make us feel that we of the Army are not the only Americans serving their country nor the only group of Americans making sacrifices. Again, we wish to thank you for the gifts and to pledge ourselves to do our part on the battlefront as you are doing on the homefront .
