Notice that figure 4.3 contains selected-response items which are appropriate to declarative content. However, these items do not actually require students to execute the procedure of reading a climate map.

Actually, reading a climate map (for examples of real climate maps, visit Climate.gov on the maps and data tab) would demonstrate competence with 3.0 content. Test items for score 3.0 content that would go with the climate map include the following.

• What geographical issues could be contributing factors to the extreme drought in the northern part of the country?

• Using the climate map, describe the drought conditions for our area.

• Choose one area of the country from the climate map and describe the short-term impact on such things as agriculture and grasslands in that region.

• How are weather and drought related in the southwestern portion of the United States?

Traditional Tests and Psychomotor Procedural Knowledge

Teachers can also use traditional tests for the psychomotor procedures, but, again, such tests usually focus on score 2.0 content that is declarative in nature. Figure 4.4 depicts a traditional test for the physical procedure of throwing, as described in figure 2.14 on page 40. Again, the items in figure 4.4 are selected response and short constructed response in nature, which are appropriate to the declarative knowledge embedded in the procedure.
