Evidence for Count Joseph’s church

The mystery of the location of his church was solved when a Byzantine structure was discovered in Yafia in 1951. The excavation by Professor Sukenik revealed a place of worship and he asked the question whether it was a pagan temple, a Jewish synagogue or a Christian church. His conclusion was a Jewish synagogue based on the floor mosaics showing they could be symbols of the twelve tribes of Israel. However he noted that the layout and orientation of the building was more like “a church” facing east rather than a synagogue. A proposal can be made that one of the mosaic floor panels discovered at the site is that of the Apostle John. His symbol in early Christian art was the eagle (refer Illus. 38). The mosaics of the twelve tribes would not be a problem for a Messianic Jew and they are also listed in the Apostle John’s Book of the Revelation (Rev. 7:5-8). A more detailed account explaining this building as that of Count Joseph in Byzantine Nazareth has been given. 19
