It had come down to my final attempt. I remember telling myself to relax over and over again. I hoped this time all my fears would fade away and I would be able to focus on the task at hand. Unfortunately, like in life, it didn’t happen the way I wanted it to. During my final problem called the Whammy Knot, I left the chest strap on my dive tanks twisted and signaled to my instructor I was done and ready to surface. When I breached the surface I sounded off, feeling pretty confident I had passed. The instructor was cool as he told me I had done everything correctly, except for the twisted strap. The emotional devastation was immediate. After exiting the pool, I sat cross-legged with my head down on the deck of the CTT with the seven other students who failed Pool Comp. A feeling of defeat swept across my horizon. I was positive that I was going to be dropped from training because of my failure to complete this major evolution. The fire in my gut had been extinguished by my own failures. I had lost focus on achieving my goals.
