When interviewed for 60 Minutes on March 1, 2009, Ponzi scheme victims said they thought they were “lucky” to be selected by Bernie Madoff (Kroft and Markopolos, 2009). It is evident they made the intentional choice to not ask questions about the 12 percent interest they were somehow earning. Adults chose to not use the literacy skills that are being taught as vital skills to students. Harry Markopolos, the financial analyst who was the first to discover the scheme, noted that it only took him five minutes to analyze the performance line and realize it was impossible. Then, he did about four hours of mathematical modeling to confirm his analysis. Literacy is no longer an isolated school subject—the need for literacy in all disciplines surrounds students and adults alike. With the inclusion in the ELA CCSS of disciplinary literacy concepts for reading, students will be able to read like a mathematician, historian, scientist, literary critic, or musician—whatever is required—throughout school and into college and careers (Piercy and Piercy, 2011).
