“Seeding” a new backyard pond with muck from a nearby woodland pool introduces microorganisms and macroinvertebrates that will populate the pond and begin to establish a food chain to support frogs and larger creatures.

Yard Features That Attract Wildlife

Insect Hotel

Beneficial insects pollinate plants and control the pests who eat our food plants or sting us. An insect hotel is a structure built with natural materials to provide a variety of nesting spots for different types of beneficial insects and small animals. Place your insect hotel in your pollinator garden so that the plants and this habitat house will work together to welcome the critters you want to attract. Your hotel can include a variety of materials to create cavities of different kinds that will attract beneficial insects, and also make the hotel look interesting. Here is one version of an insect hotel that can be an easy weekend project.
