Stamping Them Out

Tools, time and energy can sometimes be used to help eradicate invasive plants like English ivy. Merrie-Ellen Wilcox

As soon as a non-native species arrives in a new ecosystem, it begins to change the ecosystem. And the longer it stays, the more and the bigger the changes. That means it’s really only possible to eradicate (get rid of) a non-native species from an ecosystem when it hasn’t spread too far and hasn’t been there too long.

Plants can sometimes be pulled out with tools and hands. If that’s not possible, a biological control might be used, like a beetle or other insect—or even goats. Larger animals such as mice and rats (rodents) can be trapped, shot or poisoned. Fish can sometimes be caught one at a time or trapped in large numbers. Biological controls are sometimes used for insects, often by introducing a predator or disease from their native habitat. People frequently resort to using pesticides (chemicals that kill plants, insects and other organisms). And sometimes all available methods are used together.
