Most of the troughs, however, were created just to satisfy the aesthetic preferences of the designer. Herein lies the special appeal of trough gardens, in particular for those with limited space at their command. Troughs can, and do, live on apartment balconies. Squat down and go eye-to-eye with one, and be transported from cityscape to pristine mountainside. Some of the plants play with the sense of scale, the tiny buns and shoots bearing normal-sized flowers when they bloom. Others produce blossoms as delicate as the foliage, snapping the viewer back into miniscule.
The care of the troughs is similar to that of the plants inside the Alpine House, except that they receive a dose of fish emulsion in early spring (when mountain plants customarily receive a burst of nutrients from snow melt) as well as the regular regimen of water-soluble fertilizers. Because the reservoir of soil is larger, the troughs do not need watering as frequently, especially when natural rainfall supplements what falls from the watering can. For those who vacation in summertime, when alpines in conventional pots may need irrigation every day, troughs are a more workable option.
Visitors ooh and aah over the Alpine House, but what they more typically identify with, and imagine themselves creating, are the troughs. Not on a Wave Hill–scale surely, but almost anyone can find a sunny spot for one or two of the miniature landscapes. They have the appeal of bonsai, the impact of a larger garden distilled into an essential minimum. Just the right size, in short, for some of nature’s most exquisite creations.
