YELLOW-RUMPED CACIQUE This slim, raucous tropical bird has a long tail, blue eyes, a pointed bill, and black plumage with a bright yellow rump and yellow “epaulets” on its wings. Gregarious, vocal creatures—the male’s song is a vibrant mix of cackles, fluting notes, wheezing caws, and occasional mimicry—it gathers in large, noisy colonies that can be heard far across the forest. Living in close, crowded quarters for protection against the snakes, mammals (mostly primates), and larger birds like toucans that swoop in to eat their eggs (or chicks, or selves), caciques will assemble up to a hundred nests—bag-shaped, Dr. Seuss–like creations that hang from the ends of branches with strings of plant matter dangling off—in one large tree.

The cacique is depicted in Peruvian folklore as a rumor-mongering boy wearing black pants and a yellow jacket—a paucarcillo—who talks trash about the wrong fairy and gets metamorphosed into a noisy bird.
