Showy Goldenrod

Scientific Name Solidago speciosa

Family Asteraceae

USDA Hardiness Zones 3a–7b

Bloom Period Summer–fall (August–October)

Growing Conditions Performs best in full sun and average-to-dry, well-drained soil.

Perfectly named, showy goldenrod is arguably the most striking member of this diverse genus. It is an unbranched wildflower that expands into larger multi-stemmed clumps over time. Plants spread by underground rhizomes, making it ideal for naturalizing larger meadows or prairies. Note, however, that it can become a bit aggressive under ideal growing conditions. A durable perennial, it is tolerant of poor soil and dry conditions but thrives in regular garden soil, requiring little care and adding ornamental value to any perennial border, butterfly garden, or cottage garden. The elongated, plume-like flowers are distinctive and provide a wealth of resources for many foraging pollinators, doing so well into the fall.
