What Really Matters

Even if you don’t have a lot of free time to give to the Guard during your husband’s command, the best thing that you can do is support him unconditionally. Being in the military is a calling, in a way. It isn’t just a regular job. It is just too important. During his command, he will have to work very hard. The hours are long. Just remember that he’s not the only one working overtime. You aren’t the only wife who feels a little neglected from time-to-time. We always hear that families come first, and we do in our Soldier’s hearts. But the demands of command mean that many times, his job will take time away from you and your family. This isn’t because he doesn’t want to be with you or is choosing work over you or your kids, it’s because duty calls.

Being a company commander is demanding. And being married to a company commander is demanding, too. Sometimes it’s hard not to take things personally. We think that our Soldiers have a choice in the hours they work, or the homework they are expected to complete between drills. Before your husband’s command, drill seems like something Soldiers just show up for. But during your husband’s command, you will see what it takes to keep a company running smoothly. The welfare of the Soldiers and their families is foremost in your spouse’s mind. Everybody has to pull their weight. Your unwavering support and encouragement is the key to your Soldier’s success.
