My mom is obsessed over how long my hair is. She would never let me cut it (except trims), and now it is down past my butt. I love spending time just brushing my hair, feeling the silky smoothness in my fingers.

Mom comes home late one night, obviously drunk. I had fallen asleep on the couch while watching a movie and my hair is now a mess. My mom starts ranting about my hair, and how messy it is and how I probably hadn’t even brushed it today. She just keeps going on and on about it.

She goes to the kitchen and comes back with a pair of scissors from the kitchen. I’m nervous, not knowing what she is going to do.

My mom starts towards me and grabs my hair, forcing me to stand still. She takes the dull scissors and just cuts a small amount of hair. I’m screaming at her to stop. I keep telling her that I don’t want to have short hair, that I love my long hair.

She holds the cut locks of hair in my face and mockingly tells me that if I would take better care of my hair, then she wouldn’t have to cut it. I try to plead with her, but it doesn’t help. She continues to cut my hair all the while still telling me it’s my fault.

Tears run down my face as she keeps cutting. My hair is covering the floor. When she is done, I can’t even put my hair in a ponytail.

I skip school the next day, too embarrassed to go.
