1. Start by adding a layer of fresh compost around your permanent plant. This will give both plants a nutrient boost.
2. Choose your plant for underplanting. Here I am using a mint.
3. Divide it into pieces that have some roots attached. Plant the pieces around the permanent planting and firm them in well.
4. Water the pieces in and return to harvest the underplanting regularly. Leave mint uncut – or only minimally cut – if you want it to flower and lure in the pollinators.
