Other activities on offer at Stream Walk include creating a forest garden, making paths, laying hedges and making compost. Some community gardens keep bees, hens and even pigs, with maintenance and produce divided among their carers. On Friday mornings at Stream Walk a group of mums and toddlers come to learn and play, and Saturdays are open days for anyone to participate or just enjoy a cup of tea from the new tea hut.

As an occasional volunteer, I receive emails telling me what jobs need doing, from planting native trees destined for local open spaces to pond clearing, or inviting me to a barbecue and keeping me up-to-date on plans for the new compost loo. The whole garden is also available as a venue for local celebrations, further spreading the word about the joy of home-grown food.
