Sunny briefly shut her eyes. Jack was going to kill her, she just knew it.

“You’re sorry about what?” Jack asked.

“Later. Can I send him away?” The man’s zombie look was starting to creep her out. Mortals always appeared normal when Jack controlled them. What was she doing wrong?

“If you’re finished with him, go ahead.”

Sunny concentrated and sent the message. After the second try, the policeman walked away, out of sight.

“What did you tell him?” he asked.

She chuckled. “That he saw two squirrels on the fence.”

“That’s a good one.” His laughter turned into a cry of pain, slicing her heart.

“Oh, Jack.” If it hurt that much to laugh, what would he feel when she straightened him out? Oh, why did she let go of the fence?

He tried to convince her he felt fine, but she didn’t believe him for one minute. Still, he needed her help. She gritted her teeth as if she were the one in pain and dragged him to the fence. His face contorted, but not a sound left his lips.

She walked around to his head and grasped him by the arm pits. “I don’t know if I can do this. It’s going to hurt.”

He patted her cheek. “I won’t lie, it will hurt, but I’ll feel better once it’s over. It’s a good thing this stadium is big.” He smiled. “Maybe no one will hear me screaming.”

She would notice and it tore her heart apart. He wouldn’t be in this mess if it weren’t for her.

“Just count to three and–”

She pulled, cutting him off. He screamed. Bones cracked. She wanted to cry.

“You can stop, now.” He took a deep breath and closed his eyes. “Much better. I’ll just lie here for a while.”

After replacing his shoes, she sat against the fence. She never wanted to go through that again. “So, what’s next?”

He glanced at his watch then pulled his cell out of his front pocket and examined it. “Wow. Still works.” After punching in some numbers, he placed it up to his ear. “Hey, Frank. Where are you?”

Jack had said he felt better, but he seemed stiff, as if he were in a lot of pain. And why wouldn’t he be? He broke his gosh-darn back. Could he walk back in his state? Could he stand? They had run to the stadium from Bobby’s and it still took some time. Walking back would be way slower. Did they have enough time before the sun rose?

“Can you get her keys and drive over to Heinz Field?” he asked. “Thanks, buddy. We’ll see you soon.” He snapped his phone shut and stared at her. “While we’re waiting for Frank, why don’t you tell me what you found out from that nice officer.”

Oh, fudge. Her heart started racing. He would be so mad, she just knew it. Then he might yell and hurt himself. She deserved it all, that wasn’t the point, but he didn’t need to exert himself. He needed to get better, first. “We need to find someone for you.
