Chapter 12

When I’m asked what the first physical feature I notice in a person is, I always answer, the eyes. Maybe it’s because of that old adage about the eyes being the window to the soul; I don’t know. All I know is that one of the first things I noticed about Jim, Neil, and my current husband are their eyes.

My coworker from California Riviera, Neil, had the bluest eyes I had ever seen along with jet black hair to offset them. As I touched on in a previous chapter, he and his family were originally from Jordan, having migrated to the States a few years prior. When he was transferred from his telemarketing position to an administrative role, we ended up working the same schedule which offered us a chance to get more acquainted with each other. This was probably the reason why I liked my coworkers so much; to those on the outside looking in, we were all a little “off” in our own way. To reiterate, this was my experience at this particular company. I’m sure there are many other telemarketing companies that operate in a more professional manner; however I didn’t work at any of those places.

A few minutes after he left the office, my phone rang. It was Neil. He asked me if I could meet him at a deli down the street from the office ridiculously named Tummy Stuffer. He said he wanted to talk to me about something. I immediately felt both nervous and excited. I honestly had no idea what he wanted to talk about even though to the average person it would be pretty evident. I was afraid of someone from
