One particularly sensitive community college professor told me, “I never use professional jargon in my classes, because if my students didn’t understand what I was saying, no one in the class would ever ask me.” As a student, I realized that he was right. “What does that mean?” is, incredibly, just not the kind of question that an American college student would ask.
