Chapter 11

Troy couldn’t believe he’d asked Juliette out for ice cream. What’s more, he couldn’t believe that she’d agreed to it. Something had changed tonight, and it was a change he very much wanted to explore.

They walked side by side down the busy Los Angeles sidewalk, their shoulders almost brushing. The typical night life was in full swing, and boisterous laughter spilled out of clubs while neon lights flashed up and down the street.

Juliette pulled the wrap more closely around her shoulders, scooting closer to him as someone passed by them on the sidewalk.

“Are you cold?” Troy asked, ready to shrug out of his jacket and offer it to her.

“No,” she said quickly. “I had a really great time tonight at the party. Thanks for inviting me.”

“The forty dollar steak lived up to your expectations?”

Her eyes crinkled in a smile. “Definitely.”

“Then my work here is done,” he joked, holding open the door of the ice cream parlor for her. She slipped past him, dress swishing softly around her legs and nearly driving Troy mad.

He’d always loved flirting with Juliette. But these past two weeks had shown him just how much there was to love about her.

She smiled up at him as they took their place at the back of the short line, making his throat clog with an emotion he couldn’t quite name.

Juliette had been perfect tonight—a great conversationalist who’d charmed everyone she spoke with. She’d made him memorable in the minds of dozens of important architects at the firm, and Troy didn’t think he could ever thank her enough for that. Whether he ended up getting a job there after graduation or not, those contacts would be invaluable in the future.

Tonight, Juliette hadn’t felt like his fake girlfriend fulfilling her end of the deal. She’d felt like a real one.

Troy shoved his hands in his pockets, staring at the dozens of ice cream flavors. It was just after midnight and there were only four other couples in the shop, officially making it the least crowded Troy had ever seen it.

“What are you going to have?” Troy asked Juliette.

She pursed her lips, eyeing the counter. “There are so many options, I’m not sure how I’ll pick.”

“We can sample every one,” Troy teased. Then he imagined Juliette taking a taste from a sample spoon before handing it to him to finish, and his mouth went dry.

Juliette laughed, shaking her head and apparently completely oblivious to the emotions driving him mad. “I’ve always been a sucker for mint chocolate chip. And cookie dough, actually.”

“That explains the tubs of ice cream in your freezer.”

“Hey, a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do. If I gain ten pounds this semester, I’ll know exactly what to blame all the stress-eating on.”

“Math?” Troy guessed.

Juliette nodded. “Pretty sure my blood pressure has already risen a zillion points. I’m going to cry if I have to give up the internship.”

The internship she’d worked so hard for. Troy put his hands on her shoulders, forcing her to look at him.
