Chapter 6

THE NEXT MORNING, Faye woke up to an empty bed. She pulled the sheets to cover her bare legs even though Ralph was nowhere in sight. Where did he go? But most importantly, why did he leave?

Oh, God.

She buried her face into the pillow wanting to scream. Or maybe puke. How did things get so out of control? And when had her feelings for Ralph changed? She had always loved Ralph, but never like this. Never with a burning desire to feel his lips on her.

No, stop.

It didn’t mean anything. It couldn’t have. Not until she talked to Ralph and set things straight. Was he still pretending? Or could his feelings also be changing? But then again, why did he leave? Did he not want to wake up next to her?

Her phone pinged, but she couldn’t remember where it was. The room looked like a hurricane swept through, and it reminded her of the night before. How they took their sweet time before finally making it to the bed. The wave of flutters inside her stomach combined with nervousness made her slightly queasy, and she took a deep breath. When her phone pinged again, she welcomed the distraction.

She jumped out of the bed wearing nothing but his button-down shirt and shuffled through the clothes, looking for her phone. It was thrown on top of the dress she was wearing last night, and she grabbed it quickly before more thoughts unraveled in her mind.

A new email.

Malora Hart! She squealed like she’d just gotten fifty percent off of a handbag, but as the email opened and the words appeared on her screen, her mouth fell open and she stopped breathing. It was like a punch to the gut, making her feel sick all over again.

The wedding she was being hired to stop was none other than Geremy’s.

Everyone rushed around with blissful joy. The bridesmaids giggled as they walked past Faye with their hair in curls. The groomsmen were nowhere in sight, although if Faye had to guess, they were probably at the bar.

Was Ralph with them?

“I hid the dress,” Amber’s voice snuck up behind Faye, startling her for a brief second. “It was too stunning to waste it on Lexa.”

Faye couldn’t agree more, but hearing Amber say it caught her by surprise. “I’m guessing you two don’t get along?”

Amber chuckled. “She doesn’t like that I manage my brother’s money. Obviously, it means she doesn’t get to spend it all.”

“Does your brother know that?”

“That she’s a gold digger?” Amber replied with a laugh, but Faye wasn’t laughing. Lexa wasn’t just a gold digger, she was throwing herself at her fiancé’s friend. What kind of woman would do that? “My brother may be gullible, but he isn’t stupid.”

“Do you know anyone who would want to stop this wedding?” Faye asked, trying to sound nonchalant. “Hypothetically speaking.”

“You mean, other than our entire family?” Amber laughed again, but then brushed it off. “No one is happy about this. Mom and Dad refused to come, but he’s not backing down this time.
