Note

When any piece of music is based on a particular musical scale, we say that the music is in the key of that particular scale. For instance, a song based around the key of C Major

scale is simply in the key of C Major. A song based around the key of the B-flat Major scale is said to be in the key of B-flat Major. Whenever you assign a key to a piece of music or to a musical section within a larger piece of music, it’s simply assumed that most of the notes in that piece of music will stay within the corresponding musical scale. So if a piece of music is written in A Major, most or even all of the used musical notes in the chords and melody should not be outside the A Major scale. Although there are exceptions to this, they're simply referred to as accidentals. Accidentals are discussed later in this chapter.
