Preparation, Preparation, Preparation

It is no secret that being prepared for a performance will result in confident playing. It is as the saying goes: proper prior preparation prevents poor performance. What I used to think and I know many others still think is that this means one needs to practice their instrument 5-8 hours every day until they know their pieces inside out. Though this may be a great goal, music performance is so much more than simply playing your instrument in front of an audience. There is other preparation outside of merely practicing which must take place in order to accomplish a great performance.

Prepare your endurance by playing through your entire recital program from beginning to end without stop. This is not only a physical test of endurance but also a mental one.

Preparation for a performance also includes the little details which may seem unimportant, but can affect the result of the performance. Details such as eating a healthy meal with foods you know will not result in making an emergency trip to the washroom when you play are items that require your consideration.

Finally, be sure to prepare not only your music by playing it, but also research the history of the pieces in question. Research the context of when the piece was composed to be informed of the style and genre. The more mental connections you can make about the music you are playing, whether through knowledge or through practice, the more confident and certain you will be regarding the performance of the piece.
