Chapter Five

MODES, SCALES, and KEY SIGNATURES

PART I: MAJOR SCALES / SCALES WITH SHARPS

Just as there are rules and practices governing grammar and syntax in language, there are practices that govern the materials and organization of materials used in music making. Differences in these practices result in different styles and types of music. These practices underpin differences that occur in music among and within cultures. The rules and traditions that stylize music are themselves subject to change. Often, these changes accompany changes in a society’s cultural fabric. Western music is far from an exception.

Until about the end of the sixteenth century, the church modes served as the tonal basis for musical composition. The simplest way to think of these modes is to consider our musical alphabet—and the notes they represent—excluding sharps and flats. If we begin with any natural tone and ascend or descend the distance of an octave, we will have played one of the modes. Below is a table of all modes and their names. These names are associated with areas in the ancient Greek world.
