The Programmatic Drama of Franz Liszt (1811–1886)

Liszt is best known for his piano works, but he did write orchestral and other ensemble works, though nearly always including keyboard. His piano music is noted for its difficulty. These pieces are usually divided into two categories—firstly, original works, secondly ‘transcriptions’, ‘paraphrases’ or ‘fantasies’ on works by other composers. Liszt invented a new form—the ‘symphonic poem’—an orchestral piece in one movement in which an extramusical programme provides a narrative or illustrative feature. The programme may derive from a poem, a story or novel, a painting or other source. The term was used by Liszt to describe his thirteen single-movement works of this kind. They were not pure symphonic movements in the Classical sense since they dealt with descriptive themes adopted from mythology, Romantic literature, history or fantasy.
