Hit the Streets

Traditional marketing is as important as viral.

Sell yourself one fan and one gig at a time.

No one’s broken huge yet from online sales and marketing alone.

Chapter 9

The New Distribution

For the musician, distribution has never been easier or more diverse as in the M3.0 world. There are now numerous ways in multiple areas to get product into the hands of the consumer, but these additional choices also require a new distribution strategy.

In the time prior to M2.5 (before iTunes), distribution was strictly a retail process in which the customer purchased directly from a brick–and-mortar retail store (yes, there were things like record clubs and, later, online CD retailers such as Amazon, but the bulk of the sales were made through retail stores). In M3.0 however, the artist is presented with new possibilities that go beyond the traditional brick–and-mortar retail. These include online digital distribution sites such as iTunes and Amazon MP3, digital and CD sales made directly to the customer online, and a hybrid of the above, such as CD Baby or Tunecore. Let’s take a look at some of the current available options, as well as a new way to think about distribution.
