But how do you find them? My favoured method is to wait for someone who has discovered a handful of them, perhaps while digging over a rose bed near a beech hedge, to bring them along to ask for my expert opinion. I will say that I have no idea what they are but that if they leave them with me I will study them most diligently and let them know the results of my cogitations in due course.

Slightly more reliable is to simply find a suitable spot and scratch around in the hope of finding something. By far the best place to look is in open beech woods on chalky soil. There should be little in the way of ground cover, such as ivy and bramble, as Truffles dislike, and even suppress, surface vegetation, and their presence can sometimes be inferred from these exceptionally bare patches of ground. The little diggings of squirrels searching for a snack can also provide a clue and I have even found partially nibbled Truffles just lying on the forest floor.
