Golden top, Psilocybe cubensis Until I began researching this book, I knew very little about recognizing and identifying psilocybin-containing species, and while I know they are hard to find, I am not even sure how often they show up on the ID tables. My impression is that senior mycologist notetakers are making discreet checkmarks on species lists and not saying a word about them aloud. Paul Stamets calls out this profound reticence in his Psilocybe identification guide. He describes stoic, cautious mycologists who fear they might promote the harvest of illegal drugs, or worse, be liable for accidental poisonings. Less understandable are the conservative doctors, who Stamets says have pumped the stomachs of nervous trippers to “teach them a lesson.”

Even Long Litt Woon, in her book The Way Through the Woods, about grieving her husband’s death while discovering mushrooming in Norway, describes how hard it was for her to learn anything about magic mushrooms, in a chapter called “The Mushroom That Must Not Be Named.” After futile attempts to glean information from a senior mycologist—who told her if she tried to take magic mushrooms she would end up in a coma—she held clandestine meetings in a café with an anonymous informant called “N” who described the effect of a mushroom trip as a beautiful thing and a way to see the world, they said, “without any filter… it doesn’t provide you with any answers, but it helps you to see the world more clearly.”
