Lion’s Mane

Hericium erinaceus

Uniquely beautiful, snowball-like formations of shaggy lion’s mane grow naturally on the logs and trunks of dead hardwoods in Europe, North America, and Asia. In the U.S., you’ll find lion’s mane growing in late summer and fall in the southern parts of the country. They grow in clusters with solid middles and stems, and soft, ivory spines on the exterior. They’re a safe mushroom for beginner foragers since there are no poisonous look-alikes. Lion’s mane mushrooms are often available in many grocery stores and farmers’ markets, and easily purchased online.

Lion’s mane is an easy mushroom to cultivate, and can be grown indoors from fruiting kits. Powders and tinctures are available at health stores or online promoting its many health benefits.
