Model boats

Location: Showcase 5, in the corner, behind the granary

Description: 1) Wooden model of a rowing boat. Boats like this were used to drift along the Nile following the current. The oars were used to steer the boat or to navigate towards one of the riverbanks. 2) Wooden model of a sailboat. When travelling northward they used the sail to move against the current.

Significance: God warned the Israelites: “If you refuse to obey all the words of this law, the things written in this scroll, and refuse to fear this glorious and awesome name, the LORD your God …Then the LORD will make you return to Egypt by ship.” (Deuteronomy 28: 58, 68). When Moses wrote these words he may have had in mind boats like the ones you see here.
