Tips for Psychotherapists

Once again, multimedia psychotherapy confronts us with the problem of setting: there is a moment, during the music session, when patient and therapist listen together to some song or piece of music chosen by the patient. What is the therapist’s role at this special moment?

The therapist must be aware that a “syncytial atmosphere” is very likely to develop in the music session if the song is actually played. In other words, the therapist has two options here: going on the web to find the lyrics and discuss the background of the musical piece with the patient, or listening to it together with the patient as well. The second choice changes the atmosphere of the session, inducing a regression to the group-individual levels of the mind or, in Freudian terms, to “primary process” (Freud 1900), because music speaks a universal language that directly evokes unconscious emotions and affects.
