THE THROBBING IN HER HEAD was part of a dream. Someone was playing the “1812 Overture” in her bedroom closet and every time the cymbals crashed her head felt as if it was going to split wide open. There was a fireman eating breakfast in her kitchen and Mr. Campinelli was modelling a wedding dress for his wife. And there were feathers all over the floor, but she wasn’t sure whether they’d come from a pillow or the huge white duck that was sleeping under her bed.

Nina slowly opened one eye and then the other, the disjointed dream dissolving in an instant. But the headache was still there, pressure at either temple. She slowly pushed up on her elbows until a wave of nausea made her stop. Through bleary eyes, she glanced at her surroundings. This wasn’t her bedroom and she wasn’t in her bed. And there wasn’t an orchestra in her closet either.

It all came back to her, slowly. She was lying on Cameron Ryder’s sofa, in her little black dress, with a hangover bad enough to lay low an entire fleet of hard-drinking sailors. Sucking in a deep breath, she tried to sit up again. This time she nearly made it to vertical before she was forced to stop.

From the meager light coming through the windows, she guessed it might be six, maybe six-thirty in the morning. For the first time in a long time, she’d slept the entire night through. Unfortunately, her dry mouth and tangled hair and aching head didn’t make her feel completely refreshed. She felt as if she’d been run over by a city bus.

When she finally managed to get her feet on the floor, Nina noticed that she wasn’t alone. At the foot of the sofa, Cameron had pulled up a chair. He lay sprawled in the soft cushions, his chest and feet bare, the top button of his jeans undone. Nina was afraid to breathe, afraid she’d wake him up. But he slept soundly, his hair mussed, his quiet expression boyish and vulnerable.

Though they hadn’t spent the night in the same bed, Nina still felt a bit guilty. She should have left immediately, once she learned she wasn’t at one of Charlotte’s parties, but in Cameron Ryder’s apartment. This whole plan to spy on him had been ridiculous, something she never should have let Charlotte talk her into! Good grief, she had no chance of resisting his charms—how could she possibly bend him to her will? She’d do best to gather her things, leave quietly before he woke up and turned that sexy smile on her.

On wobbly legs, she crawled off the sofa. “I need aspirin,” she murmured. “I need water. I need a gallon of mouthwash.” Nina took a quick look at Cameron, focussing on his mouth, the firm lips that had teased at hers, and that mussed hair that slipped so easily through her fingers. Drawing a ragged breath, she turned away, then wandered around the apartment looking for the bathroom.
