Or not!

How…? No, why? Why do I keep falling for this man’s tricks?

Splashed across this morning’s newspaper was a photo of none other than Chad Hollis kissing Twinkleberry.

Just in the neighborhood, hah!

I shook my head and grumbled down the hallway to my office.

It was one thing for Mr. Chad Hollis to use me as a pawn, but for him to use one of my helpless animals.

Ugh.

Just, double ugh.

My rescues weren’t props.

I picked up the phone and dialed Chad’s number. The moment he picked up, fire ran through my veins.

“I want Twinkleberry back this morning.”

“What? She’s mine.”

“I saw the article this morning, and I will not allow my shelter to be used for your media machine. She’s not a toy. She’s going to need food, shelter, walks, hugs, and loves.”

Chad let out a sigh. “I know how it looks.”

“It doesn’t just look that way, Chad. It is that way. I swear to God, you don’t have a genuine bone in your body. I want my dog back.”

Chad laughed. “Well, you can’t have her back. We signed the adoption papers fair and square yesterday. She’s in a loving home. My other dogs adore her, and Twinkleberry isn’t going anywhere.”

“We’ll see about that.” I glared at the newspaper.

What was even more annoying was how cute Chad looked in the photo.

“I’m just glad you didn’t bother wasting your breath explaining to me this other side of the story you’re so certain exists.”

“That other side still exists.”

I imagined him sitting in his office with a team of people eavesdropping on our call.

“Then what about this morning with Twinkleberry’s debut in the newspaper?”

“Since when is sharing good news with the public a bad thing? People need feel-good stories nowadays.”

“But why must you feel all the feel-good stories need to include you and my shelter? It wasn’t like the photo was merely a shot of Twinkleberry and you. The entire article rehashed how you not only saved my shelter, you improved it, and then it went on explaining all the pro bono work that Hollis Development did. The article was merely topped off with you and Twinkleberry. Was there even a mention of me? Even a glimpse into my past and all the work and years I’ve put into making the shelter what it has become? Funny you left out the slippery deal with the city.”

Chad sighed. “The deal wasn’t shady.”

I ignored his defense. “Did you know before I took over, the shelter wasn’t a no-kill shelter? The shelter had one of the highest euthanasia rates in the county. I put an immediate end to that practice. We are a no-kill shelter with a one-hundred percent adoption rate. Has that ever been mentioned in one of your planted stories? Does the press know that my volunteers donate more time than any other shelter in a sixty-mile radius to ensure these animals go to loving homes?”

“I didn’t know any of that,” Chad answered. “But I wouldn’t because you never open up. You never give me a chance to find out who the real Arie Langley is.
