Diagram 1: Mixing the divine and human in prophecy

The second diagram (overleaf) also makes this clear. If we look at this carefully from left to right we can suggest four categories of prophetic ministry. Most genuine prophecy today is located somewhere on the spectrum between the two extremities of an entirely human opinion or observation and an absolutely pure word from the Lord. Prophecy begins with an immature gifting of very simple and at times weak prophetic words with more of humanity than divinity about them. This can manifest either as erratic inspiration, like that of Peter at Caesarea Philippi, swinging chaotically between the Spirit and the flesh, or as adulterated prophecies with a spark of inspiration that has become clogged by an abundance of human commentary and elaboration. But as sensitivity and accuracy mature in the prophet, then more of the authentically divine will enter into prophetic utterances and less of self, because the gift is growing. This can increase to the point where consistently accurate prophetic words that are more divine than human become the norm, and not the exception. The gift of prophecy does not usually drop intact and full-grown from heaven; it must be given time and experience to grow and mature. As it does so, it passes through identifiable stages. Recognizing these can help in the weighing and discerning of the prophetic word. As church leaders develop an eye for the maturity of the gift in a person, they can respond more appropriately and pastorally to messages submitted to them because, after all, this discernment itself is a gift of the Holy Spirit which has to develop and mature in us all, just as the prophetic gift does itself.
