Marley was shocked once again by Jake’s words. “Are you asking me out on a date?” she asked, her heart pounding in her chest.

Jake grinned down at her, making a thrill rush through her. “I think I am,” he said, “and I’m just as shocked as you are.”

Suddenly she became aware of his arms around her, his hard chest pressed up against hers, and her body began to warm. “Umm, I’m not sure what to say,” she said. “I’m not looking for...”

But her words were cut off when his mouth came down on hers, his warm firm lips igniting a flame deep inside her and making her body flush with warmth. All the tension drained from her body as he kissed her, parting her lips with his tongue and delving into her mouth over and over until her knees began to tremble.

Deep inside her, a delicious ball of pleasure began to form, and her body began to tingle. When Jake began to stroke her back, she clung to him, letting the pleasure wash over her, knowing that no man had ever kissed her with the passion that Jake was. It made her head spin, and the world around her melted away.

But then she slid her hands down his back, and he stiffened, and a wave of something dark spread through her. Shocked, she stepped back from him and stood to stare at him. “I don’t think that was a good idea,” she said, her blood still pumping warmly through her veins but all too aware of something evil there with them.

Jake looked hurt, and she felt guilty, but what she’d felt had been evil, dark, and sticky. It had been a gut reaction to jump away, but now she could see it had been a mistake. “I’ll walk you home,” he said stiffly, then headed for the door.

The last thing she wanted to do was walk all the way to her cabin with Jake, especially when she saw the anger blossoming in his eyes. “I can get there okay by myself; you stay here with Stella,” she said, then slipped past him and out into the early morning light.

As soon as she got to her cabin, she collapsed into bed, but couldn’t sleep. Memories of the last few hours haunted her, especially Jake’s kiss, so full of promise at first. Getting out of bed, she threw some clothes into a bag, took a quick shower, and headed for the barn. It was time she saw Janice, and she didn’t want to do it here; if she was lucky, she could hitch a ride on one of the supply wagons into Leadville.

Janice met her at a little restaurant right off the main street, and Marley didn’t even bother to ask how she’d crossed thousands of miles to get there so fast. When she sat down across from her, she felt a pang of longing for her mother who would have been the same age as Janice if she were still alive.

“You look just like your mother,” Janice said after she’d studied Marley for a second.
