MIS COUNTERCONSEJOS

Using a Chicana feminist epistemology learned from my tías, I am determined to create a constellation where my scholarship, community work, and motherwork intersect, all while moving through university tenure-stream requirements. Working alongside community members has presented sufficient possibilities for scholarship, especially when these projects are grounded in grassroots and systematic change. Engaging in this work not only grounds me in the reality of life off campus but continues to serve as motivational knowledge. In the end, these humble experiences have revealed that it is essential for women of color to create a balance within in their lives while continuing to create spaces where work and family are central.

We women of color who are scholars, activists, mothers, daughters, nieces, comadres, and granddaughters cannot continue the cycle of patriarchy. It is our responsibility to acknowledge that nuestras comunidades (our communities) are holders and creators of knowledge (Delgado Bernal 2002). We must recognize our constant negotiation of a space meant to exclude our knowledge base and struggle to open those spaces for future scholars of color.
