KATE ~ JULIA’S GARDEN

D oomed. My whole life feels doomed. I can’t carry on like this. Pretty soon I’m going to have to do something about it. I can’t take much more of this shit.

Alex: Ah, you’re up. When did you get back? I didn’t hear you come in.

Kate: You were asleep. Snoring.

Alex: I thought you were staying in London last night anyway?

Kate: Well I didn’t. I was bored. I came home. OK?

Alex: You were bored? That’s a new one. I thought London was absolutely the be-all and end-all?

Kate: Look, I just had a shit night, that’s all. Nothing to do with London.

Alex: So, what? It was the people you were with? Your mates , the wonderful Colin and Tanya? You bored with them now?

Kate: I felt ill , I was tired.

Alex: Kate, is something going on? Because if it is, I’d rather know. I want to talk to you, really. OK? I’d rather we just got things straight and didn’t keep secrets from one another.

Kate: I’ve told you, nothing’s going on. You’re paranoid!

Alex: But if it were, would you tell me?

Kate: That’s a trick question. I’m not answering that. Stop trying to back me into a corner! I’ve had a shit night and I’ve only just got up. No wonder I want to go to London every weekend. Being with you is such hard fucking work!

Alex: Whatever. Look, if you want to talk, I’m here. And we do need to talk, Kate, believe me.

Kate: Yeahyeah. Has anyone rung? Has my mother rung or anything? I haven’t heard from her for a week. I’m going to ring her.

Alex: Right. I’ll be in the garden.

Kate: How fascinating. Enjoy.

Come on, Mother, answer the fucking phone.

Kate: Mother? It’s me.

Julia: Hi, darling!

Kate: What are you doing?

Julia: Well, I’m in London, actually. Livia had a book launch last night for her debut novel! They’re raving about it in the press! It’s so exciting!

Kate: Yeah right whatever. Whereabouts are you, in London?

Julia: Chalk Farm, at Livia’s. A few people stayed over. It was a bit of a party, actually!

Kate: Yeah, I’m sure it got really messy, Mother.

Julia: Oh, we didn’t make a mess, no. Well, maybe a spilled glass of wine, but that’s all.

Kate: I don’t mean that sort of messy. I meant getting messy, wild, getting off your tits , oh never mind, it’s like talking to a bloody retard.

Julia: Kate! That’s a horrible thing to say!

Kate: It’s true. Oh, Mum! I’m having a really hard time.

Julia: Why? What’s happening? What’s wrong?

Kate: Everything! I can’t tell you.

Julia: Why not?

Kate : Because it’s all shit, that’s why.

Julia: I’m here to listen, darling.

Kate: Yeah well, never mind, whatever. When are you going to be back?

Julia: I was planning...well I thought...as it’s such a lovely day...I’d go back to Tewin and spend the day working in the garden. There’s so much to do, the area for the pond is totally overgrown now and really needs attacking and digging out.

Kate: I thought you’d given up on the pond idea since Dad died?

Julia: I’ve just been putting it off, really.
