THE ROUGHNECK

Avery sends me a picture of Jett sitting in between her parents as they have lunch. I wish I was eating whatever the hell is on their plates, but Colton showed up at the worksite to help sand floors. Then, he casually ordered me to join him for lunch.

“Don’t you want to eat with your parents?” I asked Maverick before we leave with Colton.

“I’ll have dinner with them and then breakfast. For lunch, it’ll be us three.”

When Maverick isn’t smiling, he looks like a Terminator. His gaze holds no emotion. Avery claims the more Maverick likes someone, the less he pretends around them. If that’s true, he thinks we’re best friends. The man ain’t faking shit right now as we sit down at a local dive.

“The food isn’t great here,” I say, avoiding their gazes.

“Yeah, but it will be soon,” Colton announces and runs his hands through his blond hair. “Pop bought it yesterday. Aunt Sawyer wants a Whiskey Kirk’s in Pema.”

“A what?”

“My grandpop’s clubhouse,” Colton says, wearing a proud smile. “He started the Reapers and built the bar so they’d have somewhere private to hang out. Later, he opened up Tequila Jodi’s in honor of my gram.”

Nodding, I glance over the menu. “Avery said the Reapers like to own businesses in their towns.”

“Nevaeh will run it,” Colton says while frowning at the food on nearby customers’ plates.

Maverick doesn’t react to this announcement, yet I sense his sister’s future position is new information.

“We’ll spend the next few years renovating half this town,” he mutters and sets down the menu. “I’ll get a sandwich.”

The waitress appears as if beckoned by the good-looking robot’s words. We all order sandwiches, sensing the rest of the menu’s choices are garbage. I find myself looking over the pictures Avery sent and wondering how their lunch tastes.

“Your sister’s a real good cook,” I babble, not thinking straight now that my brain is stuck on how I’d rather be sharing lunch with my woman and kids. “Even if I don’t recognize most of what she makes.”

Maverick’s green-eyed gaze studies me before he nods. “My mother got very creative with meals, and the twins took after her. My younger sisters less so.”

“My sisters aren’t big on cooking,” Colton says and taps the tabletop. “Too bad I can’t get any of them to move to Pema before this place turns into a Majors family wonderland.”

Maverick allows an arrogant smirk. “Yeah, too bad.”

I rest my hands flat on the table and exhale softly. “Why am I having lunch with you?”

“Well, here’s the thing,” Colton says, giving me a friendly grin. “Every club has an inner circle, right? My dad protects all of the Reapers, but he has his core group of guys. I need the same here. Obviously, there’s my VP along with Gunnar, who I knew growing up. Jox is my Tucker.”

Maverick smirks at this comment, but I don’t get it.

Colton leans back and smiles wider. “My uncle is a loud idiot. Jox isn’t a hothead like Tucker, but Heidi is.
