“You Were Good in Your Time”
“You Were Good in Your Time” is the weirdest song on Years of Refusal (and in Morrissey’s entire catalog), but that’s what makes it so good. I really like it because it has a ’70s sound and vibe to it. Slightly different, yet keeping with the theme of Viva Hate’s “Little Man What Now,” “You Were Good in Your Time” tells the tale of someone who’s at the end of his showbiz career and then dies. And Morrissey really emphasizes the dying part by cutting out of the song, letting the sparse music and background noise continue on for a few more minutes.
Samples from the 1937 French film Pépé le Moko start the song off, instantly giving it the creepy feeling Morrissey was aiming for. And it worked—“You Were Good in Your Time” definitely is a chilling, yet witty, look at fame and death.
