Item 36.

Write 0.125 as a fraction ___ (in its simplest form)

answer

This is one of only four questions in the test that uses words as instructions. Subjects have to know what ‘simplest form’ means. Some subjects may make the link that 0.125 is half of 0.25. Others may get as far as ‘125/1000’ and not be able to cancel down.

Item 37.

5.67 km = ___ metres

answer 5670

This Item requires the subject to know that 1 km is 1000 metres. It also requires an understanding of place value. Instead, many people have a partial recall of mnemonics, such as ‘move the decimal point three times for × 1000’ or ‘add a zero when you multiply by 10’. They are distracted and/or overwhelmed by the .67, that is, having only two digits and three moves to make for the decimal point. The range of errors for this item was large. Most errors suggest that the rules/mnemonics are not accurately recalled. The most frequent error was 5067 (see Chapter 9).
